the week from hell

okay. time for a little depressed venting.

I have literally had a week from hell. Monday, I came home and was doing my usual chores, which include feeding our dogs, which are kept outside so that they have more room to move about, when I noticed that, Wilbur, my chocolate lab's cyst had doubled, almost tripled, in size and had burst open. Later that night, we took him to the Vet, who told us Wilbur had cancer. They wouldn't do anything for him until we got all of his shots updated, but we didn't want to do that if we were going to end up having to put him down. They wouldn't even sew up the wound or give him antibiotics to prevent infection. When I got home from the vet's I discovered my goldfish had died, and that $5 had been stolen out of my wallet. The next day my whole pack of cigs had been stolen. After a few days of intense thought, we decided that it would be best to put Wilbur down because A) the cancer was spreading and B) we simply do not have enough money to spend $1,000 to remove the cancer plus $5,000 for each Chemo treatment. We were supposed to put him down Friday, but that had to be pushed back to yesterday morning, and by then he had gangrene. Of course, they told us then, in the office that we had other options. NOW we could meet with the actually surgeon and get a lower number. But once you have gangrene you are either going to die, or you have to get something amputated. but since the wound was on his stomach, surgery to remove the infection wasn't an option. we no longer had a choice. Watching Wilbur be put down was simply the most difficult thing I've ever had to witness.

Wilbur was born in the summer of 2002, and died autumn 2009. He was only seven years old.
